Hillsborough High School

historic preservation

WILDERARCHITECTURE was commissioned to plan and design renovations for the historically significant Hillsborough High School, originally constructed in 1927 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school is one of the most significant buildings in Florida and the “Crown Jewel” of the Hillsborough County School District. The three story facility is a classic example of Gothic Revival Architecture is a major contributing historic structure, anchoring the south end of the Seminole Heights Historic District. The project involved the phased renovation of the facility including the auditorium, classrooms, cafeteria, servery, kitchen, and all ancillary spaces while the campus remained completely operational. The interior was restored to the original condition, including existing terrazzo and natural wood flooring. Technology upgrades included new air conditioning, lighting, power, data, and communication systems. Exterior work included the restoration of 840 individual windows to reflect the original design of the school. This involved the removal of brick infill that was installed in the windows when air conditioning was added to the school in the 1970s. Building materials and mechanical / electrical systems were selected to be both sensitive to the historic nature of the campus and to provide sustainable, energy efficient solutions.

The facility houses all vehicle maintenance functions of the Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office. Also included at the site in the building is a separate EMS storage component. The vehicle bays (21’-6" clear on the inside) accommodate the largest of the department’s vehicles on lifts. Offices and storage for the Fire department vehicle maintenance function are centrally located between two repair garages. Twelve (12) bay openings (6 on each side of the building) allow access to the 80’-0" wide building for servicing of all vehicles.

Hurricane Sustainable Architecture Design for Tropical Climates

The project is located on a newly developed campus for the emergency operations building. The project has been redesigned to enhance the wind speed resistance of the facility to Miami-Dade requirements (146mph x 1.15).

Word Trade Center Memorial

community service

Completed in 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center, the City of Tampa received a portion of the north tower of the WTC complex from the Port Authority of NY & NJ. The World Trade Center site is represented as an elevated concrete base, matching the orientation and scale of the site in New York City. Thin aluminum members rise from the base, tracing the placement, material, and proportions of the twin towers. The memorial is one one-hundreth the scale of the actual towers and site. The steel WTC artifact, held above the base within the symbolic north tower, functions as a sundial. As the shadow of the artifact falls on the ground on the morning of September 11, the lower slab marks the duration of time from the first airplane's impact on the north tower to the subsequent collapse of the tower on September 11, 2001.

HEF Fishing Tournament

community service

Eight years ago Larry Wilder and Jim Inman decided an innovative and fun way to raise funds for the Hillsborough Education Foundation was to present a Fishing Tournament. WILDERARCHITECTURE is committed to serving the Hillsborough Education Foundation’s Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament year after year. We have raised more than $950,000 hosting 12 Fishing Tournaments and have initiated a fully endowed scholarship program. The Tournament allows the firm to help raise needed funds for the Foundation and as a bonus, have a great day of fishing. At WILDERARCHITECTURE we feel it is important to give back to our community and the Tournament has been a successful way to help us accomplish this goal.

THOMPSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

education

Wilder Architecture recently completed the design of the new J. Vince Thompson Elementary School for Hillsborough Public Schools. The 90,000 square foot facility will serve 940 students in the South Shore area. The school includes the latest in energy efficient technology, and will incorporate local and regional materials. Once constructed, solar umbrellas, learning gardens and large outdoor classroom areas will further compliment the elementary curriculum. This new prototype elementary school is the first facility to follow the LEED certification process (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) for Hillsborough County Public Schools. The modern campus design takes advantage of the Florida climate with open corridors, bridges, breezeways, and a solar umbrella. Taking an updated approach to the Florida finger plan school from the 50's and 60's the classroom buildings are single loaded and with an east west axis taking advantage of daylighting with large north facing windows and shaded walkway covers on the south. The exterior, 2-story covered walkway system serves as a "main street" connecting all major classroom circulation components. Shading devices and garden areas encourage social interaction and learning outside of the traditional classroom.

SERGEANT PAUL R. SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL

education

Designed with sustainable design principles, this campus is sited on just 8.5 acres - less than half the size of a typical middle school. The prototype middle school is designed with optimal flexibility to fit any number of small or irregular sites. Special purpose instructional spaces include an art studio, music suite, and physical education facility with gymnasium, play courts, play fields, and a running track. The core support spaces of the program include a media center, an administrative and student services building, a large multi-purpose room and food service facility. Areas of this facility are designed as an Enhanced Hurricane Protection Area (EHPA), serving as a shelter for the community in the event of a storm or natural disaster. The Design Team incorporated several significant yet inexpensive teaching tools in to the design of the facility. A significant concrete tilt-panel wall at the entry of the campus is inscribed with a sundial. The shadow cast by the gnomon on the first day of each month is marked on the panel by a precise 1” curved reveal. The furthest extents of noon on the same day are marked by diagonal that cut across the arcs. The gnomon, or pointer, is a 2” diameter, 2’ long steel member inserted into the face of the tilt panel. The wall and its demarcations are a point of discovery used by students and teachers over the course of the year. This building was recognized with a Hillsborough County Planning Commision Award of Excellence.

Plant Hight School Addition

education

In order to meet Class Size Amendment criteria, the Hillsborough County School District commissioned Wilder Architecture to provide a prototype repeat of the two-story Newsome High School CFK addition. The Newsome High addition has 24 classrooms. The Plant High School variant was reduced in size to a total of 16 classrooms. The split faced block of Newsome was substituted with a brick veneer. A five-brick blend was selected by the Design Team with a black beauty mortar to matching the historic fabric of the original 1927 campus buildings
